The motif for this fan was inspired by a portrait of Empress Eugénie painted in 1855 by the German painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873). In the background is a view of the Château de Fontainebleau, and in particular the horseshoe-shaped staircase, built at the request of Louis XIII between 1632 and 1634 and attributed to the architect Jean Androuet du Cerceau, it gives access to the François I gallery and the castle's Grands Apartments.
