Louvre Jewellery Collection Susa, one of the oldest known cities, was founded around 4,000 B.C. in the beautiful plain of present-day Khuzistan in Iran. Starting in 1897, the city was explored by a French expedition that found masterpieces of Mesopotamian art brought there as war booty, as well as traces of the Elamite civilization.
