Born in Moravia (Czech Republic), Alfons Mucha (1860-1939) was one of the most famous fin-de-siècle Parisian artists. Known in particular for his graphic work - posters, advertising, decorative panels, illustrations - he created the "Mucha style", perfectly ordered compositions, with space structured by interlacing sinuous lines, a design full of curves and arabesques, and a subtle colour palette, which became synonymous with the Art Nouveau movement.
Based on the latest research, the catalogue examines Mucha's visual language, his strategy for highlighting female beauty in advertising, and his commitment to his native country.
It brings together a hundred or so works from the Mucha Trust collection - including the emblematic Gismonda, Mucha's first poster for Sarah Bernhardt, which was to be the starting point of his success - which are echoed in a selection of works from the Quimper museum.
