Small arabesque Degas - Bronze

ZF005993
Reproduction in bronze with hand patina. Mold made from an impression of the original work by Hilaire Germain Edgar de Gas, known as Degas.

Although best known as a painter, modeling became increasingly important in Degas' work from the 1860s onward, and by the end of his career had become his primary means of expression.

With the exception of "La Petite Danseuse de quatorze ans" exhibited in 1881, his sculptures remained unknown during his lifetime. It was only after his death in 1917 that they were discovered.

If the same subjects are used - horses, dancers, women at their toilet - it is because the sculptures were only intended to improve his paintings.

Most of the surviving studies of dancers belong to the period 1880-1890.
