On stage! Costume designs from the Edmond de Rothschild Collection

This exhibition brings together a selection of some one hundred sheets from one of the most important collections of drawings of show clothes, that of the volumes of Costumes for Festivals, Ballets and Theater in the Time of Louis XIV donated by Baron Edmond de Rothschild (1845-1934) to the Louvre Museum. Their richness reveals the diversity of invention of the artists who dressed the entertainments staged at the Court of France and Lorraine from the mid-sixteenth century to the dawn of the eighteenth century: Primaticcio, Jacques Bellange, Daniel Rabel, Henri Gissey and Jean Berain in particular. Since most of the real textile works have disappeared, these drawings are invaluable sources for the history of costume, dance, music and entertainment in France during this period.
