This is the French edition of the book about the Grand Palais. On the occasion of the re-opening of the Grand Palais, artist Jen Monneret decided to look into the history of this building, through experiences and anecdotes, along with documents to illustrate the key moments of the Grand Palais's life.
It was built for the Universal Exhibition of 1900 and hosted many manifestations reflecting the course of the 20th century. Its nave is a great masterpiece of metal and glass architecture and as hosted, over the years, expressions of human genius.
At the beginning of the Republic, it was devoted to the glory of French Art. It was the preferential telltale of the evolution of modern civilisation as it hosted many fairs devoted to the great technical innovations of the 20th century: auto shows, plane shows and domestic arts show are the best examples.
It also witnessed its fair share of artistic life, through art shows. During the First and the Second World War, the Grand Palais followed the rhythm of the conflicts and hosted the soldiers and the wounded, followed by exhibitions organised by the regime between 1940 and 1944. It was closed in 1993 to be renovated.
Its rehabilitation is illustrated in this book, thanks to many contemporary photographs.
