Parmigianino was one of the pioneers and main proponents of Mannerism. Hailed by Vasari as the new Raphael, he earned a reputation as one of the 16th century's most outstanding portrait painters. He worked primarily in
Parma, before moving to Rome in 1524, and Bologna in 1527.
Among Parmigianino's best-known works, Portrait of a Young Woman (also known as Antea) is one of his most mysterious creations - the date, sitter and patron have yet to be determined. The painting demonstrates the artist's
remarkable skill and the unique allure of his portraits.
Against a background of green stands Antea, a fine-featured young woman with a piercing gaze, in a voluminous, sumptuous dress. One hand is on a long necklace, while other precious jewellery adorns her little finger, her ears
and her carefully arranged hair.
