The Restoration had to carry out a real campaign to rehabilitate the monarchy. In this context, the history of this plate representing Marie-Antoinette by Tardieu takes on a particular importance.
Tardieu began the portrait of Marie-Antoinette in 1793. On October 16, 1793, the Queen was executed. Tardieu postponed the completion of this portrait of Marie-Antoinette in Vestal after Dumont, a work that became compromising under the Terror. The spirit of this work belongs directly to the old regime, and particularly to the Queen's taste for antique decoration. Tardieu completed this work in 1815, and dedicated it to the Duchess of Angouleme, daughter of the Queen who had survived the revolutionary prison.
Deposited at the Direction de la Librairie, this plate became part of the Chalcographie collections.
