« Mark my words, people of Le Havre, it will be said in the future that all began here. »
This bold statement by André Malraux at the official opening of the first Museum-Maison de la Culture in 1961 has a dual resonance.
With its architecture of steel, glass and natural light, the sea-facing structure's open and modern aspect immediately draws the eye. And it was this same avant-garde spirit which saw the city of Le Havre emerge as a hub of Impressionism in the 19th century.
Today, its museum of modern art continues to carry the torch with an unfailing commitment to contemporary artistic endeavour supplemented by the leading Impressionist collection outside of the French capital.
