Reissue in a new format of the catalogue for the Seydou Keïta exhibition, at the Galeries nationales du Grand Palais, from 30 March to 24 July 2016.
Seydou Keïta (1921-2001), a 20th century Malian portrait painter, is today considered one of the greatest contemporary photographers.
This self-taught man opened his studio in 1948. His mastery of technique and his aesthetic sense quickly established him as a recognised portrait painter who was popular with the whole of Bamako: people came to be photographed alone, with their families or in groups. Seydou Keïta set up his models in front of patterned fabrics and worked on the staging of his shots: adjusting the poses - full-length or three-quarter-length - and lending jewellery or accessories for the occasion, Keïta sought to give the most beautiful image of his clients. Until Mali's independence in 1960, Seydou Keïta never stopped photographing his fellow citizens: his photos are an exceptional testimony to Malian society in the 1950s.
