Official catalogue of the exhibition "Paul Durand-Ruel, le pari de l'impressionnisme", Paris, Musée du Luxembourg, from 09 October 2014 to 08 February 2015.
Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922) took over the family gallery created by his father from a painters' supply store.
Enthusiastic about Delacroix, Rousseau, Courbet, Corot, he very early affirmed his taste for art and developed commercial practices that gave a new face to the gallery in the late 1860s.
In the early 1870s he discovered some future impressionists in London, Monet, Pissarro and then Manet in Paris.
From then on, Durand-Ruel will buy, sell and distribute these painters, thus contributing to a transformation of the art market.
Massive acquisitions from artists, exhibitions, publications, market conquests abroad (particularly in the United States), ongoing relationships with artists and collectors, and then with the largest museums, are all means that Durand-Ruel uses.
Through a hundred paintings, drawings and documents from public and private collections around the world, the exhibition, the first dedicated to Paul Durand-Ruel, retraces this crucial moment when an avant-garde is gaining international recognition.
The catalogue traces his relationship with the Impressionists, while highlighting the choices of a visionary and daring merchant, still considered today as the father of the modern art market.
