The cat-godness Bastet was the object of a widespread cult in Ancient Egypt. A domesticated version of the ferocious lion-goddess Sekhmet, she was represented in two forms:
as a cat-headed woman holding a small basket in one hand, a sistrum in the other, and an aegis under her breast
as a seated she-cat, with her tail wrapped around her front right paw, her ears pricked up and adorned with golden earrings, and a beetle on her head.
