Crown jewels rank 3rd among the Louvre's star objects. The collection of the jewels of the kings of France was begun by Anne of Brittany in the 15th century: the Côte-de-Bretagne ruby (105 carats), cut in the shape of a dragon, is the oldest testimony in the Louvre to this passion of sovereigns for exceptional stones.
