In the Seville of the Golden Age, a young painter, Diego Velázquez (1599-1660), is captivated by his naturalist talent. At the age of 24, he became the official portraitist of King Philip IV and his family, a position he held for over thirty years.
Shaking up the tradition of the court portrait, he knew like no other how to capture an expression or a natural gesture, to capture the intensity of a look, to model the face through the play of light and shadow, to inscribe the body in space.
However, he did not shy away from genre painting, historical subjects, landscapes, religious or mythological scenes, or the nude. His encounter with Rubens and his stays in Italy enriched his artistic culture and renewed his creative audacity.
